Average DVD price in France 2011-2021

The price of a DVD sharply increased from 2014 to 2015 and has reached a plateau at around 12 euros before reaching 14.22 euros as of 2021. As a matter of comparison, new DVD releases’ price, while experiencing some fluctuations and reaching its lowest point in 2014, has been increasing at a much slower pace.

DVD market in France

The DVD market is generally on the decline in France as less and less people buy and use them to watch movies. The DVD sales revenues have drastically dropped in less than a decade, while the sales volume is lower every passing year. It is also worth noting that while more recent, Blu-ray sales did not manage to exceed DVD sales and are also gradually decreasing.

A new digital way of consuming video content

Video-on-demand services have completely changed the way consumers watch video content over a very short period of time. Indeed, the services offers a considerable number of movies and TV shows for a monthly subscription that is often lower than the price of a single DVD. Among the main VOD platforms in France, Netflix held its ground as most consumers who watched a program on such a platform did it on Netflix. Over the past decade, the VOD market has increased fourfold and exceeded 1.7 billion euros in 2021.
