Most successful French movies in France since 1945

Welcome to the Sticks, comedy released in France in 2008, is the most successful French film on the big screen in France with an audience of more than 20 million people. Two other monuments of French cinema, The Intouchables and Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra, came second and third in the ranking.

The American way

Directed by Dany Boon, Welcome to the Sticks is narrowly surpassed by the success of James Cameron's Titanic, which has had nearly 22 million admissions since its release in 1998. American films are often at the top of the box office in France because of their very popular productions. In 2021, the films with the highest number of tickets sold over the year were all American creations. American films were still the most represented nationality among the feature films offered in video-on-demand in France.

The offer of video-on-demand has thus diversified in France and French consumers are very fond of Netflix, which is the most widely used streaming platform. The impact of the coronavirus outbreak has profoundly changed the way the French have access to new movie releases. While going to the cinema is no longer an option, some studios are directly releasing their biggest productions in video on demand, such as Disney's Mulan. The number of subscriptions to the Disney+ platform has exploded since its release in France on April 7,2020.
