Level of interest in cinema films in Germany 2019-2024
29 million Germans were moderately interested in going to the cinema in 2024. While this figure had grown slightly the previous years, the share of those very interested was dwindling. The German cinema industry is facing similar challenges to those in other countries, among them the rapid rise of video streaming services for consumers, which can be used at home or virtually anywhere.
The Allensbach Market and Advertising Media Analysis (Allensbacher Markt- und Werbeträgeranalyse or AWA in German) determines attitudes, consumer habits and media usage of the population in Germany on a broad statistical basis.
Mainstream and arthouse
The most successful cinema films in Germany based on revenue generated in 2023 were Barbie, The Super Mario Bros, and Oppenheimer. These were all mainstream international blockbusters. Meanwhile, some of the most successful arthouse films in Germany, based on visitor numbers, included Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon. The number of German cinemagoers watching specifically German films has fluctuated dramatically in the last decade.
Going to the movies
Cinema ticket prices in Germany have increased consistently in recent years, in particular due to the equally increasing competition from online video and film streaming services that consumers can access virtually anywhere, therefore eliminating the need to go somewhere else in the first place. The number of cinema admissions has been slowly increasing after the pandemic, with 96 million cinema goers admitted in 2023, compared to 78 million the year before.
