Electrified powertrain production is forecast to reach 6.18 million in 2020, an increase of around 2.5 million units from 2017. Electric vehicles are typically powered by an electric powertrain, while conventional cars use internal combustion engines (ICE), and the majority of hybrid vehicles use both.
Which vehicles require an electrified powertrain?
Electrified powertrains are built into battery electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles. Despite projections showing that production numbers will increase, it is expected that electrified powertrains will only represent a 4.6 percent share of the overall powertrain production market in 2020.
Consumer opinion at a crossroads
From 2020 onwards, ICE-powered vehicle sales are expected to decline across Europe, China, and the United States, suggesting that manufacturers are shifting their focus to electrified powertrains. However, customer preferences regarding powertrains remain divided around the world: 71 percent of survey respondents in the United States said their next vehicle would be powered by an ICE powertrain; in China, 65 percent of consumers stated they would prefer an electrified powertrain.
