This statistic shows the share of dedicated biotechnology companies in selected countries for 2014 (or latest year available), by application. In that year, some 55.6 percent of dedicated biotechnology companies in Italy were active in the health sector.

For Austria, "Other" includes the second largest category where 17.9% is ‘non-specific applications’. This includes all companies providing services exclusively or mainly for other biotechnology firms, which are active for these as suppliers. For example firms specialised in contract research and manufacturing of biopharmaceuticals, fall into this category as well as pure contract manufacturers of biological molecules without in-house development activities.
For Israel, "Other includes "Bioinformatics".
For Italy, results are by primary application.
For Korea, "Agriculture" includes "Natural resources".
For Mexico, "Health" includes aquaculture and animal health.
For Poland, results are by primary application. "Industrial processing" includes "Food and beverages".
For Slovenia, "Industrial biotechnology" instead of "Industrial processing".
For United Kingdom, information is not available on the number of non-biotechnology firms e.g. manufacturers of chemicals, which use biotechnology in industrial processing. Information on agricultural biotechnology may underestimate the number of companies.
