Brits prefer strong cheddar
Cheddar comes in a variety of different strengths, but mature is the nation’s favorite. In the 52-week period ending 13 August 2017, retail expenditure of mature cheddar cheese was worth 683 million GBP. In comparison, expenditure on the second most popular style in the same period amounted to 272 million GBP. In the same year, an estimated 14.9 million of the British public consumed English mature cheddar. Just 5.3 million used the mild variety.
Production increasing
The production of cheddar cheese in the UK has been increasing in recent years. Despite a fall in production in 2013, production increased annually in the following years and by 2017 reached a volume of 326,000 metric tons. This was the largest annual volume produced since the turn of the century.
