Average bank overdraft fee in the U.S. 1998-2023
The average bank overdraft fee in the United States (U.S.) decreased for the second consecutive year in 2023 after four consecutive years of increased fees between 2018 and 2022. The average fee amounted to 26.61 U.S. dollars, down from 29.8 U.S. dollars in the previous year. The overdraft fee, also called non/sufficient funds (NSF) fee, is charged on bank customers when they don't have enough money on their account to honor incoming payment requests.
