Number of companies on London Stock Exchange 2015-2023

As of July 2023, the number of companies trading on the London Stock Exchange stood at 1,900 - a slight decrease from the previous month, and still one of the lowest number of companies listed during the period under observation. These companies had a combined market capitalization of approximately 3.62 trillion British pounds and daily average trades of anywhere between 500,000 and two million.

Market capitalization

Market capitalization is the outstanding value of a company's shares and is often used to measure the size of a company and investors interest in a given enterprise. Market capital is calculated by multiplying the number of shares outstanding by the value of one share.

Initial public offerings (IPOs)

When a private company first offers its shares to the public, the process is called an initial public offering (IPO). IPO’s are often used by growing companies that need to raise capital or by allowing owners to sell off some of their ownership of a company. In 2020, the Kazakhstan-based mobile banking company Kaspi.kz saw an initial public offering of over 6.15 billion British pounds (GBP).
