Multiple answers were possible during the survey.

The tier system was designed by the Chinese government to categorize urban space in China. Cities are grouped according to their population size, gross domestic product, economic growth, location and historical and cultural significance. Currently, only Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou belong to the tier 1 category. Tier 2 cities are, among others, Nanjing, Tianjin, Suzhou, Chengdu and Xi'an. Tier 3 cities are Zhongshan, Guilin, Dongguan, Shantou etc. Tier 4 and tier 5 cities make up the lions share of Chinese urban space and are mostly located in the West and North East of China, such as Luoyang, Jilin or Yan'an.
