This statistic shows the number of roadside screening breath tests that were carried out and failed or refused in England and Wales (UK) between 2002 and 2016. Although the number of roadside breath tests carried out in England and Wales went up slowly between 2003 and 2009, albeit with a subsequent decline, the number of tests failed or refused was steadily falling.
Generally, positive and refused breath tests went down gradually over the period of record, while the number of roadside screening breath tests rose steadily to a peak in 2009, and subsequently fell to 463,000 breath tests in 2016.
