Globally, the aesthetic medical and surgical market was valued at some 4.3 billion euros in 2012 and is expected to rise to some 6.6 billion euros by 2018. The United States made up almost half of this market. Caucasian individuals consisted of a significant share of the cosmetic procedures performed in the United States. In 2013, cosmetic procedures performed on this group made up 78 percent of the total procedures in the country. Cosmetic procedures in Asia are becoming more prominent as well. Countries like China, Japan, and South Korea contributed to a large share of Asia’s 29.5 percent of worldwide cosmetic procedures in 2011.

In 2013, the United States expended the most on lipoplasty and face lift procedures, totaling around one billion U.S. dollars and some 870 million U.S. dollars, respectively. Lipoplasty is also commonly known as liposuction. It is a type of “fat modeling” procedure where fat is most commonly taken from the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. Liposuction can occur through various methods such as ultrasound-assisted liposuction but generally, fat is removed using a hollow tube and suction device. Approximately 363,900 lipoplasty procedures were performed in 2013 in the United States.
