Number of physiotherapists in the United Kingdom (UK) 2010-2024

In 2024, there were approximately 56.3 thousand physiotherapists employed in the United Kingdom. Overall, a significant increase from the start of the provided time interval in 2010, when there were around 44 thousand physiotherapists employed in the country. 

Frequency of visiting physios in Britain

As of 2018, there were 33 percent of individuals in Great Britain who were living with a long-standing limiting health condition or illness. This is slightly higher than the share of those in similar sized Western European countries such as Spain and France. The same year, 19 percent of people in Great Britain stated they visited a physical or occupational therapist at least once a year. In comparison to other European countries, Great Britain has a lower frequency of physiotherapist consultations. 

Other healthcare professionals are also increasing

Across the same time period, the number of physicians/medical practitioners in the UK has increased to over 347 thousand physicians in 2023. Additionally, the number of employed and self-employed nurses in the UK has also increased to approximately 743 thousand nurses in 2024.
