This statistic compares the number of passengers using the Channel Tunnel and those making Short Sea journeys in the United Kingdom (UK) between 1994, when the Channel Tunnel opened, and the year 2018. In 2018, number of Short Sea passengers amounted to nearly 19.6 million, while the number of Channel Tunnel passengers reached over 21.5 million.
The number of passengers passing through the Channel Tunnel increased steadily until 2014, but the number of passengers making Short Sea journeys decreased. Since 2016, more people travel by the Channel Tunnel than by Short Sea.
