The number of licensed cars on the road in the North East grew steadily between 1995 and 2008, after which decreased slightly. The total number reached 3.142 million by 2014. The total for Great Britain in 2014 was 29.6 billion.
In 2017 the number of licensed cars in the North West of England increased to more than 3.2 million.
