Where Humira is used
Humira is used mostly for the treatment of rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis. However, like many other top drugs, the range of medical conditions it can be used to treat is much larger. Thus, the drug is also used to treat Crohn’s disease, ankylosing spondylitis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, uveitis, and some other autoimmune diseases. Humira is administered subcutaneously via injection. It was approved for the first time in 2002 in the United States.
Humira’s impact on AbbVie
Humira is manufactured by U.S. pharmaceutical company AbbVie and generated a massive 19.9 billion U.S. dollars of total revenue during 2018. Thus, AbbVie made 60 percent of its total revenue through Humira. It was speculated if Humira would be the first drug ever to generate global sales of over 20 billion dollars. However, projections show us that this might not happen, but more likely there will be a distinct decrease in revenue until 2024.
