Tequila production volume in Mexico 1995-2023
In 2023, Mexico produced 598.7 million liters of tequila, representing a decrease of about eight percent compared to the previous year. Despite this decrease, the production volume of tequila has increased by approximately almost 155 percent in the past ten years.
What is tequila?
Tequila is a distilled spirit made from the blue agave plant, which takes its name from the city of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco, the main production area for the drink. Depending on its purity, this traditional beverage is divided in two basic categories: '100 % agave' and 'Mixto'. The first category includes tequila made from 100 percent blue agave and is the most produced type of tequila nowadays. Tequila 'Mixto' is made with additional sugar sources and used to be the leading category in past years.
Internationally known
With over 64 percent of production destined to exports in 2022 , tequila has morphed from a local drink to a worldwide known beverage. The leading recipient of Mexican tequila exports that year was the United States, with approximately 338 million liters traded. This is more than 32 times the volume imported by Germany, Mexico’s second most important tequila export partner.
