This statistic shows the number of hotels selling alcohol and pubs in England and Wales per year from 2008 to 2016, by type of license. In 2016, 38.6 thousand hotels and pubs were licensed for on-sales of alcohol, compared to 41.5 thousand licensed for off-sales.
In the UK drinking establishments licensed for on-sale of alcohol are licensed to sell for consumption on the premises after purchase, whereas an off-license means the opposite. Off-licenses are often held by shops.
