In the African region, 12,384 cases were notified as having MDR-TB in 2011. Tuberculosis is cased by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. In 2012, 8.7 million people developed TB while 1.3 million died due to the disease. Drug-resistance is a major global health concern.
