Reasons for unreported burglaries against businesses 2014 statistic

This survey shows the reasons businesses gave for not reporting cases of burglary with entry on their premises to the police in England and Wales in 2014. Of respondents, 52 percent claimed the reason for the burglary going unreported was due to a lack of police engagement, such as believing the police could not have done anything or that they had not done anything in the past.

Data for manufacturing and transportation and storage sectors was collected in 2012 and data for "Arts, entertainment and recreation" was collected in 2013.

Burglaries excludes attempted burglary.

Definitions:

'Lack of police engagement' as defined by the source includes "police could not have done anything; police have not done anything in the past; police would not be interested; and tried to/was unable to contact police."
'Police came' as defined by the source includes "police came automatically/responded to an alarm; and someone else reported the incident"
'Other' as defined by the source includes "it's not a crime/it's just something that happens; legal system not able to deal with this type of incident; there was no insurance requirement; would increase insurance cost; crime was committed in another country; realised too late after the incident/too long had passed; recovered/retrieved/returned goods/money; fear of negative publicity/impact on reputation of business; didn't want to report it to the police; thought it was our own fault; didn’t give this a thought/know we could/had to report it; still investigating/looking into this; don't know/can't remember; and other."
