The share of girls aged eight to 18 years old in the United Kingdom who enjoyed reading amounted to 40.5 percent as in 2024, according to a survey held in spring that year. Whilst it was true that more girls than boys expressed enjoyment in reading (in line with annual trends) the 2024 percentage was the lowest recorded but a significant percentage points higher than the figure for boys. The gender gap in reading enjoyment fell between 2005 and 2024.
