The share of girls aged eight to 18 years old in the United Kingdom who enjoyed reading amounted to 45.3 percent as in 2023, according to a survey held in spring that year. Whilst it was true that more girls than boys expressed enjoyment in reading (in line with annual trends) the 2023 percentage was the lowest recorded and only a few percentage points higher than the figure for boys. The gender gap in reading enjoyment fell between 2005 and 2023, but this is partly due to a drop in girls' enjoyment, whilst boys' remained more stable.
