Pineapple production in the United States has slowed down in the last couple decades. In 2002, the volume of pineapples produced in the United States amounted to 290.3 thousand metric tons, and by 2022 this figure had dropped to just about 168 thousand metric tons.
Top Producers of Pineapples
As pineapples are a tropical fruit, they do best when planted in warm, humid, coastal climates with abundant rainfall. When put on the world stage, the United States’ pineapple production is rather insignificant, perhaps because the United States has a very small amount of land that fits this description. According FAO data, Costa Rica and Indonesia were the leading producers of pineapples, based on production volume.
Fresh Fruit Consumption in the United States
Americans consume large amounts of fruit on an annual basis, mostly in the form of fresh fruit. In 2018, the average American consumer ate around 115.1 pounds of fresh fruit, and around 80 pounds of fruit juice. Pineapples were the sixth leading type of fresh fruit in terms of per capita consumption in the United States. The most consumed type of fresh fruit in the United States in 2021 was bananas.
