As of January 2024, Costa Coffee had the highest amount of units among the leading coffee shop chains in the United Kingdom, with 2,677 outlets. Greggs and Starbucks ranked second and third, respectively, with 2,474 and 1,266 outlets. 

What are the leading UK coffee shop chains?

In addition to being the coffee shop chain with the highest number of units in Europe in 2022, Costa Coffee was the leading coffee shop chain with the highest revenue in the UK that year. Meanwhile, Costa Coffee's competitors, Starbucks and Caffè Nero, both generated revenue of less than 500 million British pounds in 2022. 

How popular is Starbucks in the UK?

Starbucks is the only non-British company in the ranking. Although the company’s popularity failed to match the success of Costa Coffee in 2022, the number of Starbucks stores in the UK was higher than in any other European country. The overall number of Starbucks stores in the UK has grown gradually since 2012, with the company from Seattle seeing increases in both licensed stores and company-operated stores since 2020.
