The over-the-counter (OTC) allergy medication industry is booming in the U.S. In 2016 Zyrtec (Cetirizine HCl) was the leading over-the-counter allergy medication by revenue. In that year Zyrtec generated some 347.7 million U.S. dollars in revenue. Flonase was the second-highest revenue generator during that year with 332 million U.S. dollars in sales. The number of people in the U.S. using OTC allergy medicine continues to increase every year.
Allergies in the U.S.
Allergies are a common medical concern in the U.S. Allergies are the result of the immune system reacting to a specific foreign substance. A recent survey has demonstrated that about 20 percent of adults in the U.S. have been diagnosed with some form of allergies. People can suffer from both indoor and outdoor allergies. Allergies can depend heavily on regional variations in vegetation but can also be caused by pets and dust mites. As of spring 2019, it was determined that McAllen, Texas was the top location where spring allergy sufferers were expected to suffer the most.
Hay Fever in the U.S.
Hay fever is an extremely common allergy in the U.S. and is estimated to affect over 50 million people annually. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to grass, weeds, trees or pollen and mostly causes a runny nose. Adults between the ages of 45 and 64 years tend to suffer the most from hay fever allergies and those from 18 to 44 years tend to suffer the least. Among children, those between the ages of 12 and 17 had a higher prevalence of hay fever than other children. Regionally, adults that live in the West were more likely to have been told that they had hay fever than other regions in the U.S.
