Mexico: number of hospitals 2009-2022
Mexico's hospital landscape surpasses 5,000 establishments. Over the past decade, the sector has seen an increase in the number of hospitals by more than 600 units. Most of these institutions are private and for-profit, with some of the best-ranked hospitals being privately owned.
Hospital beds
The rising number of hospitals is accompanied by an increase in hospital beds. In contrast to the number of establishments, the number of beds is higher in public institutions. Obstetrics and gynecology departments hold the largest share at over 20 percent, followed by pediatrics and internal medicine. These three specialties account for more than half of all hospital beds in the country.
Workforce distribution
The hospital sector in Mexico employs nearly 927,000 people, close to 200,000 people more than in 2012. While hospitals play a crucial role in healthcare delivery, nearly half of all healthcare professionals work in doctor's offices, with psychiatric and addiction treatment hospitals employing about 29 percent of the workforce.
