* Avoidable waste is classified in this report as food and drink thrown away that was, at some point prior to disposal, edible, e.g. milk, lettuce, fruit juice, meat (excluding bones, skin, etc.). Possibly avoidable waste is classified as food and drink that some people eat and others do not, e.g. bread crusts and potato skins. Unavoidable waste is classified as waste arising from food and drink preparation that is not, and has not been, edible under normal circumstances, e.g. meat bones, egg shells, pineapple skin, tea bags.
** The average UK household size is calculated to be 2.4 occupants.
