Number of Costa coffee shops in the United Kingdom (UK) 2008-2018

This statistic illustrates the number of Costa Coffee stores open in the United Kingdom from fiscal year 2008/09 to 2017/18. Over this period, the number of stores more than doubled. In the fiscal year ending 2018, there were a total of 2,422 Costa stores open in the UK. Including international operations, Costa's total number of stores came to 3,821 in 2018.

Costa Coffee is a British multinational coffeehouse brand, operating stores in 31 international locations as of 2018 and ranking as the biggest coffee shop chain in the UK. Costa is also a leading player in the European coffeehouse market, with the highest number of units in Europe in 2017.

Owned by leisure and hospitality company Whitbread, Costa generated total revenues of 1.3 billion British pounds in 2017/18. This was a significant contribution to Whitbread’s total revenues which were reported in the same year to be 3.3 billion British pounds.

The prominence of Costa in the UK is also reflected in the number of consumers using the chain, with Costa ranking first for usage in 2016 compared to other coffee shop and sandwich bar brands. Awareness of Costa as a coffee brand is also high according to Statista’s Hot Drinks survey.
