In England and Wales there were over 4 thousand excess winter deaths of women over the age of 90 in the winter of 2019/20. By comparison there were only 2.2 thousand excess winter deaths for women under the age of 75, and 3.1 thousand men.

Winter deaths are calculated as the difference between the number of deaths during the four winter months (December to March) and the average number of deaths during the preceding autumn (August to November) and the following summer (April to July).
