Shell's income 2022-2023, by segment

In 2023, Shell's upstream segment had the highest earnings, at 8.5 billion U.S. dollars. That year, there was a notable decrease in earnings for the integrated gas segment, falling to around 7 billion U.S. dollars from 22.2 billion U.S. dollars the previous year. Most notably, the company's renewables and energy solution segment reported its first year of profits.

Shell is one of the top five oil and gas companies worldwide, operating in every segment of the oil and gas industry. The company has announced it will reduce its involvement in fossil fuel production and instead focus on its chemicals segment and alternative energy sources such as hydrogen.
