In 2023, China's total waterway freight traffic amounted to 9.37 billion tons. Breakdown by region, Anhui Province ranked first nationwide with more than 1.54 billion tons of freight in that year. In second and third place were Jiangsu and Zhejiang Province, with 1.18 billion and 1.17 billion tons of waterway freight respectively.
