Leading rough diamond producing companies
Rough diamond production is concentrated among a few major players. Alrosa, headquartered in Russia, and the South African company De Beers hold a majority of the world’s diamond production volume, with each of the companies having accounted for nearly 28 percent of the global diamond market in 2021, respectively. As of 2022, De Beers' diamond production alone amounted to nearly 35 million carats.
Which countries produce the most rough diamonds?
Russia was by far the world's leading diamond-producing country in 2022, accounting for a 35 percent share of global rough diamond production. Botswana, which accounted for a 20 percent share of global rough diamond production, and Canada, with 14 percent of global production, followed in second and third place, respectively, at that time. With the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Africa also ranking among the five leading diamond producing countries, Africa is the world's largest diamond producing macro-region, having accounted for more than half of global production in 2020.
