Smartphone users in Australia 2017-2026

In 2017, the number of smartphone users in Australia was around 19.9 million. This number was estimated to reach 23.6 million by 2026. This represented a smartphone penetration rate of around 87 percent in the country.

More than just a way to make calls

To Australians, a mobile phone or a smartphone was more than just a way to make phone calls. A good data allowance facilitated the use of more than just the basic features of smartphones and nearly half of Australians said that they used the more advanced features of their phones, such as mobile email and internet. By comparison, a small share said that they used their phone only for making calls.

 The many uses of smartphones

A large proportion of Australians used their smartphones for accessing social media and using messenger or chat apps. Additionally, mobiles were used for everyday activities such as transferring money to friends or family, as a boarding pass, and as a casting device.
