As of January 2018, the most expensive music video ever made was ‘Scream’ by Michael and Janet Jackson, which cost seven million U.S. dollars to produce. Both Michael and Janet Jackson’s videos featured more than once in the ranking of the top twenty most expensive videos, as well as three videos from ‘Queen of Pop’ singer-songwriter Madonna.
Madonna’s most expensive music videos
Madonna has been internationally famous for as long as most music fans can remember, and some of her tours generate hundreds of millions of dollars. The singer does not skimp on her music videos when it comes to special effects, extraordinary themes, and money – ‘Bedtime Story’ and ‘Express Yourself’ each cost five million U.S. dollars to make. This enormous spend was not in vain, however – both received generally positive reviews from critics in the industry and are arguably some of Madonna’s most memorable. The surreal intensity of ‘Bedtime Story’ was dubbed as being ‘Dalí-esque’ (a reference to the style of Spanish surrealist painter Salvador Dalí), whilst ‘Express Yourself’ was applauded for its approach to female empowerment and sexuality and its subversion of traditional gender norms.
Madonna’s most expensive music video to date is ‘Die Another Day’, which cost 6.1 million U.S. dollars to produce and was the theme song for the 2002 James Bond film of the same title. The movie is the fifth highest grossing James Bond movie in North America, and Madonna starred in the film in a minor role as the character Verity, a fencing instructor. The video was independent from the film itself but was Madonna’s interpretation of the movie’s plot, and deals with themes of torture, duality, and the battle between good and evil.
