The Russian gas and oil company Gazprom generated some 8.5 trillion Russian rubles in revenue in 2023, while the operating loss stood at approximately 364 billion Russian rubles in the same year. Gazprom was the only company exporting pipeline gas from the country.

Headquartered in Moscow, Gazprom was created in 1989 after the Soviet Ministry of Gas Industry was converted into a corporation. Today, Gazprom has become a privatized company, with the Russian government holding a majority of shares. Apart from fossil fuel production, Gazprom also holds subsidiaries in other sectors such as finance, media, and aviation. One of the largest employers in Russia, Gazprom had over 498,000 personnel.
Gazprom's position in the global gas market
Gazprom accounted for 12 percent of the global natural gas production in 2021, having increased its market share from the previous year. The company is one of the largest extractors of natural gas in the world and in Russia.
