Number of employees of Wal-Mart world by country
Walmart
The largest retail corporation in the entire world, Wal-Mart Corporation had over 2.2 million employees worldwide and over 450 billion U.S. dollars in net sales in 2013. It was founded by Samuel “Sam” Walton in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 1962, where its headquarters continue to reside to the present day.
In addition to being the world’s leading retailer, it is also the leading grocery retailer in the U.S. with its “Wal-Mart Supercenters” stocking full-scale grocery stores in-addition to their normal general merchandise offerings. Despite its public listing on the New York Stock Exchange, the corporation remains primarily family run, with the Walton’s holding a nearly 50 percent share of the entire company’s stock offerings. While it has experienced success in many international markets, like the U.K. and Mexico, the company has had difficulties when entering some other retail markets, such as Germany and South Korea, finally abandoning both altogether.
Domestically, the companies’ low prices have not been enough to quell criticism regarding its treatment of employees, with noted cases of union busting tactics and company-wide salary deflation, and its frequent negative effects on small businesses. Even taking these negative aspects into account, though, one can say with confidence that the future for Wal-Mart remains bright, with its role as the retail juggernaut unlikely to change in the near future.
