Number of digital 3D cinema screens worldwide 2016-2021

In 2021, there were almost 126.34 thousand digital 3D cinema screens across the world, up from 82.92 thousand in 2016. This represents an increase of 52 percent over half a decade. Meanwhile, the number of digital 3D screens in the United States and Canada declined by 12 percent between 2016 and 2021.

Digital 3D and its trends

Besides the decrease in the number of screens, the so-called North American movie market – consisting of Canada and the U.S. (including the unincorporated territories of Guam and Puerto Rico) – saw the number of 3D film releases diminish throughout the second half of the 2010s. Only nine 3D titles premiered in that region in 2021, down from 45 in 2016.

3D in the Eastern Hemisphere

In 2011, the region known as the Asia Pacific was home to little more than one-fifth of the global number of digital 3D cinema screens. A decade later, the region's share stood at two-thirds. The acute expansion in the world's most populated region reflects an increasing demand for entertainment on the big screen.
