The top categories of internet activities carried out in one week in the United Kingdom (UK) in 2020 are ranked here by the share of respondents who reported performing these activities the week before the survey. It was found that after essential tasks such as email, communications, and banking, 50 percent of respondents had used the internet for some kind of social media activity.
Facebook as a news source
As of February 2020, Facebook was the most popular social networks in Great Britain, with an audience reach at least doubling that of other networks such as Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. In addition to that, Facebook was also surveyed to be the leading social network where most respondents received or shared news weekly. Comparatively, only half as many respondents relied on Twitter for their news.
Trust in social media news
Despite its popularity however, there is still a relatively low level of trust in news found on social media with 57.7 percent of respondents surveyed in May 2019 claiming to have come across at least one instance of inaccurate reporting.
