Company segments
Headquartered in Duisburg and Essen, Germany, ThyssenKrupp AG is a global leader in industrial engineering and steel production. It operates in a broad range of segments, such as high-speed trains, elevators, automobile parts, and shipbuilding. Based on revenue, ThyssenKrupp Automotive was the sixth largest German automotive supplier, generating nearly 11.9 billion euros in 2019. The company was also one of the leading companies worldwide in the elevator segment: in 2020, ThyssenKrupp was the fifth-largest company in the elevators and escalators sector, generating a revenue of some 7.67 U.S. dollars. In July of that same year, the company discontinued its elevator technology segment, after the sale of this business to a bidder consortium led by Advent International and Cinven.
Financial performance
Between 2002 and 2021, the net sales of ThyssenKrupp peaked at 53 billion euros of net sales in the fiscal year 2007/2008. Since then, the company's sales revenue has stayed under 50 billion euros. In the fiscal year 2020/21, ThyssenKrupp reported net sales of 34 billion euros. In 2021, ThyssenKrupp employed around 101,300 people globally. In analogy with net sales, the company’s workforce also declined after 2008. Despite these downturns after the global financial crisis of 2008, the company retains its global position. As of 2020, ThyssenKrupp was among the 50 most profitable companies in the world, with a net income of 10.7 billion U.S. dollars.
