In current times, watching online videos has become one of the most popular internet activities, along with playing games and engaging in social networking. According to a recent survey, some 61 percent of the entire population of the United States and over 77 percent of the U.S. internet users accessed digital video content in 2014. Online video penetration in a number of leading online markets exceeds U.S. figures, with 96 percent of South Korean users having accessed online videos, while 92 percent of Spanish users and 91 Percent of Italian did so. Furthermore, some 25 percent of global internet users and 24 percent of those in the U.S. watch online videos every day.
Watching traditional TV is still the preferred video medium in the United States, with an average of some nine thousand minutes per month in of the fourth quarter of 2014, but watching videos on the internet is quickly growing in popularity. Americans watched an average of 629 minutes of online video per month in the fourth quarter of 2014, an almost two fold increase compared to figures from the third quarter of 2010. In terms of user groups, 18 to 24 year-old are the most active video consumers, with almost a thousand minutes of online video content per month.
The most popular platforms for watching videos among U.S. audiences are Google Sites (including YouTube), with 145 million unique monthly viewers, followed by Facebook, AOL, Inc. and Yahoo! Sites. YouTube is one of the largest video-sharing platforms in the world, with over 60 percent of worldwide users claiming to access it at least once per day.
