Siemens AG saw its annual revenue increase from around 62 billion euros in 2021 to almost 72 billion euros in the 2022 fiscal year.
R&D expenses down, intensity up
In the 2020 fiscal year, Siemens reported research and development expenses of 4.6 billion euros compared with 4.7 billion the previous fiscal year. Despite this, the R&D intensity – the ratio of these expenses and revenue – increased year-on-year. There was equally growth in terms of the number of patents registered under the German company between the 2019 and 2020 fiscal years: from 42,400 in 2019 to 42,900 in 2020.
On track for a green future
Germany's rail operator Deutsche Bahn and Siemens have recently announced their plans to test the use of hydrogen for rail services for the first time in 2024. With the innovative project set to cut carbon dioxide emissions, DB aims to replace its 1,300 diesel-powered trains with more climate-friendly alternatives and ultimately become carbon-neutral by 2050.
