Vehicle sales volume in Russia 2005-2023
After 2008, when the car sales volume peaked in Russia at roughly 3.2 million sold vehicles, a significant growth was recorded again in 2012, nearly reaching the 2008 levels. However, over the following years until 2020, the figures dropped. In 2023, over 1.3 million new motor vehicle sales or registrations were reported nationwide, marking a significant increase compared to the previous year.
Russian automotive market overview
In 2014, the Russian economy entered a downturn as a result of political woes related to Moscow's Crimea annexation, which left its trace on the Russian automotive industry as well. From 2017, the market recovered gradually, with production and sales developing at positive growth rates. However, the industry was hit again by the Western sanctions on Russia in 2022 following the invasion of Ukraine. Major car manufacturers exited the market.
Popular cars in Russia
Sport utility vehicles (SUV) generated the largest share of sales revenue in the Russian market and thus were the most-desired type of passenger cars in the country. B-class cars occupied the second-largest portion.
