North America's coal proved reserves amounted to roughly 328 billion metric tons in 2020. During the period in consideration, anthracite and bituminous reserves were greater than sub-bituminous and lignite reserves. Furthermore, coal reserves presented a trend of growth. As of 2020, North America's anthracite and bituminous reserves accounted for around 68 percent from the region's total coal reserves. The United States is a major miner of coal as well as a net exporter. Natural gas has started to replace domestic coal consumption in the United States.
