Europe and the Commonwealth of Independent States recorded some 328 billion metric tons of proved coal reserves in 2020. 51 percent were sub-bituminous and lignite reserves. During the period in consideration, coal reserves increased by approximately 23 billion metric tons.

* According to the source, proved reserves of coal are taken to be those quantities that geological and engineering information indicates with reasonable certainty can be recovered in the future from known deposits under existing economic and operating conditions.
Editions of the report prior to 2018 named the region as Europe and Eurasia, whereas the 2018 edition of the report listed Europe and CIS separately. The 2018 and 2019 figures for these two regions have therefore have been added together. CIS is an abbreviation for the Commonwealth of Independent States.
