Germany's coal proved reserves amounted to roughly 35.9 billion metric tons in 2020. During the period in consideration, sub-bituminous and lignite reserves were considerable greater than anthracite and bituminous reserves. Furthermore, since 2016, the country only recorded sub-bituminous and lignite coal. Lignite is mined in Germany, often with power plants located near mining sites to provide electricity.
