In 2022, Russia's lignite coal reserves amounted to more than 90 billion metric tons, making it the country with the largest lignite coal reserves worldwide. Australia ranked second, with lignite reserves amounting to over 74 billion metric tons.
Lignite is also known as brown coal and is a sedimentary rock formed by naturally compressed peat. With a carbon content of 25 to 35 percent, it is the lowest rank of coal due to its low heat content compared to other forms such as hard coal/anthracite.
