In 2020, 80 container ships were scrapped worldwide. This represented a decrease of some 10 percent compared with the previous year when 89 container ships were scrapped.
As of January 1, 2021, container ships accounted for about 10 percent of the world merchant fleet. Most ships in the global merchant fleet - around 27 percent - were general cargo ships.
