Big Oil and state-owned competitors
ExxonMobil is considered one of the so-called Big Oil supermajors, consisting of the world’s largest six publicly owned oil and gas companies. Apart from the supermajors, state-owned entities such as China's Sinopec and Russia's Gazprom are among the largest companies within the industry. Being among the most profitable, they also consistently top the list of largest oil and gas companies worldwide by employment, with public companies such as ExxonMobil often only employing a fraction of that number.
ExxonMobil's business segments
ExxonMobil was founded in November 1999 through a business merger. It has operations all over the world and has also acquired many related companies such as XTO Energy, a company that develops and produces unconventional resources. ExxonMobil has three main operating divisions including upstream, product solutions (combining downstream and chemical), and low-carbon solutions. One of the largest refiners in the world, ExxonMobil's petroleum product sales amounted to 5.5 million barrels per day in 2023.
