Number of international tourist arrivals in selected African countries 2019-2022

The North-African nation Egypt ranked first among the African countries with the most international tourist arrivals, accounting for almost 11.7 million arrivals in 2022. Following in second place and third place was Morocco and Tunisia, which received around 10.9 million and 6.4 million arrivals, respectively.  

 Which is the top tourist spot? 

Egypt ranked first in terms of international tourism receipts in 2022, which amounted to approximately 12.2 U.S. dollars. Morocco, Tunisia, and South Africa followed, with international tourist receipts of around nine billion, 4.8 billion, and 2.5 billion U.S. dollars, respectively. Furthermore, Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa have been the three leading countries since 2019. Regarding the Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Index (TTCI) in Africa in 2021, which measures factors and policies that make a country eligible for investments in the travel and tourism sector, Egypt and Mauritius held the top spots. Egypt received a TTCI score of 4.2 out of seven, while Mauritius received four points. Comparatively, Morocco and South Africa came in next with a TTCI score of 3.8 each in 2021.
