Number of Wendy's restaurants in international locations in 2018, by country
Ohio-based quick service restaurant (QSR) Wendy’s operated and franchised a total of 533 restaurants in international locations in 2018. The country with the highest number of establishments outside of North America was Indonesia with a total of 80 restaurants. Puerto Rico is chasing Indonesia’s tail with 76 units, coming in close second.
Franchises are taking over
Overall, Wendy’s accounted for a total of 6,711 restaurants worldwide in 2018. The vast majority of these were franchised - 6,358, to be precise. Only 353 units remained company-operated, as more and more of them were replaced with franchised stores over the past seven years. Despite the restaurant count of Wendy’s growing internationally in the last years, revenue has declined by almost one billion U.S. dollars over the past nine years. The fast food chain generated approximately 1.6 billion U.S. dollars in revenue in 2018 compared to the higher figure of around 2.44 billion U.S. dollars in 2009.

Wendy’s score on the American customer satisfaction index (ACSI) has been below the industry average over the past five years. The restaurant chain scored 77 points out of a possible 100 points in 2018, showing an increase by one point over the previous year. Comparatively, sister company Arby’s scored 79 points in 2018, higher than Wendy’s but still below the QSR average.
