According to respondents, the internal combustion engine (ICE) remained the powertrain of choice in the United States, Germany, and India in 2022, while customers in Japan, China, and South Korea said they would prefer vehicles equipped with a hybrid electric powertrain or another form of alternative fuel. Some 27 percent of survey respondents from China stated they would prefer to purchase a battery electric vehicle as their next vehicle. This was the highest value among all markets surveyed.

Original survey question: "What type of engine would you prefer in your next vehicle?" Other refers to ethanol, compressed natural gas (CNG), and fuel cell vehicles.
This data set includes responses from 703 respondents in China, 1,128 respondents in Germany, 948 respondents in India, 567 respondents in Japan, 806 respondents in South Korea, and 1,766 respondents in the United States.
