Market value of selected natural gas utilities worldwide 2023

Two of the largest natural gas utilities in the world are Sempra and Naturgy Energy Group. Sempra, which includes the subsidiaries San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E) and Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), is headquartered in San Diego and had a market value of 49.5 billion U.S. dollars as of May 2023. The second largest natural gas utility company, Spain-based Naturgy Energy Group, had a market value of 26.1 billion U.S. dollars.

Natural gas use in the power sector

Natural gas is the second most common source for electricity and heat generation, after coal. In the coming decades, global installed capacity of natural gas is projected to increase even further, climbing from just under two terawatts to more than 2.5 terawatts between 2022 and 2050.

No other country produces as much gas power as the U.S.

The United States is by far the largest gas power generating country in the world. U.S. demand for natural gas grew notably in the last few years, especially for the electric power sector. Here, it is used in cogeneration, as well as gas and steam turbine facilities to generate electricity and often utilized to supplement renewable sources during peak-load periods.
